Walking and Talking

Has anyone been walking and talking or walking and texting these days in a crowded place lately?  I had the distinct pleasure of going to a festival this weekend.  You know the usually routine rides, cotton candy, kids screaming, parents and teenagers shuffling from ride to ride with limited enthusiasm.  Fortunately, the weather was cool and I was reminded that everyone was staying connected by cell phone.

I nearly bumped into dozens of people preoccupied with receiving and sending texts while they were yakking on the phone, right after they were yakking up elephant ears from the festival rides.  It was a sheer delight to see so many people -- sort of enjoying themselves as they kept in touch over the wireless.

This was a paradise for me watching and taking in the amount of cell phone abuse that was being intermingled with long lines for rides, food, and drinks, and the occasional shoving matches between the kids.

Cell phones abusers were out numbering the civilized human beings 2 to 1 and although it was a bit much at times, the added bonus was that pre-teens and teenagers were checking in regularly with parents and grandparents.  That gave me little comfort, but I always error on the side of good judgment -- If you want to keep your kids, never let 'em out of your sight!
